Saying goodbye to Julius Vollmer

1 October 2014

The German State Theatre Timișoaramourns the passing of JULIUS VOLLMER on 23 July 2014, in Freiburg (Germany).

Born as Julius-Andreas Szabó von Szathmáry, in 1927, in Timișoara, the actor became a founding member of the German stage in Timișoara in 1953, afterhaving been forced to discontinue his study of biology. Under the alias Julius Vollmer, thanks to his significant stage presence and his unmistakeable bass voice, he became well known and appreciated, building a long career.

He played over a hundred roles on the stage of the German State Theatre, before settling in Germany, in 1983. Aside from the inaugural show of GSTT, the Students of the Cadet School, he performed here in productions such as:The Imaginary Invalid, Iphigenia in Tauris, D'alecarnavalului, Egmont, Lumpazivagabundus, Romeo and Juliet, Mary Stuart, Peer Gynt, Old Heidelberg, Servant of Two Masters, William Tell, Urfaust and so on. His vocal abilities recommended him for the cast of musical and entertainment shows.

Starting with 1987, he performed at the Freiburg Theatre, where, in 2012, he was still performing on stage in the show dedicated to him, Salutăridragi din Timișoara (Kind regards from Timișoara), in which the actor playedchapters from his own biography.

"I am always the role that I prepare. I read the script until the role enters my very own being, my every cell, my every pore. The completion of creation is a marvellous and miraculous process, until I stop thinking about the role as something distinct: in that moment, I am the role" said a few years ago the actor, for whom his art was a profession and a calling.

Vollmer was buried on 1 august 2014 in the Main Cemetery in Freiburg. The German State Theatre, with which the actor had a profound connection, extends its most sincere condolences to his grieving family.
